One of the symbols in the three musketeers is a sword. Swords are usually used as symbols in different literature. In this novel, to cross swords with another man is considered an honour. The three musketeers are also symbols for the spirit of youth, daring, and friendship. The novel also has some allusions. They make reference to King Louis XIII, Queen Anne of Austria, Cardinal Richelieu, and the Duke of Buckingham.
The tone of the novel can also be nightmarish at times. Like how D’Artagnan’s true love dies and that the people of La Rochelle are starving to death. The author also brings a light hearted touch to the book by making comedic events and how everything is a fun adventure for the heroes. The novel also has many different themes. Friendship is portrayed that the friends never argue and they always support each other. Love is shown when D’Artagnan falls in love with Constance Bonaciuex and that a man proves his love for a woman with the most crazy acts he can think of. Finally, pride is shown because the men in this novel are very proud and do not take insults lightly. So, because of this pride, misunderstandings usually result in a duel, like how the musketeers misunderstood D’Artganan and wanted to duel with him.
