The Three Musketeers takes place mostly in various apartments in Paris , France , or in inns in the countryside of France , and partially takes place in England . The story takes place in the seventeenth century. The French King at this time was the great Louis XIII, and he dominated the second first half of the century. France was the greatest power in Europe at this time. Louis XIII’s interest was in the visual arts, so the visual arts became more popular then. Paris , a city of about 600,000 inhabitants, was only half the size of London , the world’s largest seaport. But, regardless of their size, French cities were centres of intellectual transformation. It was there, in the Sociétés de Pensées, Masonic lodges, and some 32 provincial academies, that writers found their public. There also took place the Cultural Revolution that inspired the writers in turn and the economic changes that gave momentum to the cultural upheaval.
This story takes place during the famous French Revolution. D’Artagnan comes from a little town on the outskirts of France called Gascony . The biggest adventure D’Artagnan and his three musketeer friends face is when they try to help the Queen, Anne of Austria, get her earrings back from the Duke of Buckingham (who is from England ) who she first gave to. The funny thing is that the king, her husband gave her the diamonds, which she then gave to the Duke. Obviously, she was having an affair with the Duke of Buckingham.

The three musketeers are unremarkable typically various apartments around Paris or inns in the countryside of France. This dovetails well with Dumas’s reliance on dialogue to tell the story. This dovetails well with Dumas’s reliance on dialogue to tell the story. The settings Milady finds herself in, however, are quite dramatic. When she is taken prisoner by Lord de Winter, she is brought to a castle overlooking a steep cliff. When she makes her escape, it is storming. Later in the novel, the chapter detailing her execution begins with a classic Gothic introduction: "It was a stormy and dark night." She is executed on a river bank; "a moonbeam fell upon the blade of the large sword." Both settings are deliberately eerie and draw upon the Gothic novel tradition, which sought to combine horror and romance. In Gothic novels, innocent virgins are typically trapped in castles by cruel men and persecuted by various tyrants. Dumas offers a twist on this tradition, as Milady is anything but an innocent virgin. It is instead the men who are portrayed as being righteous and upright.
